1st time I've seen something like this, in a house where part of the main floor was gutted.
Thanks to the writing on one side and a google search, I was able to determine it's known as a John Mansville Transite vent pipe, of asbestos-cement construction. In this specific house, it had been acting as the vent pipe for the water heater.
